This term of derision for the cheap and vulgar has been applied, says the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, "since the early 20th century to works considered pretentious and tasteless. Exploitative commercial objects such as Mona Lisa scarves and abominable plaster reproductions of sculptural masterpieces are described as kitsch, as are works that claim artistic value but are weak, cheap, or sentimental." "Sentimental" means, according to the American Heritage Dictionary, "resulting from or colored by emotion rather than reason or realism." "Emotion rather than reason" - well, yes, that is precisely the point.
Yogi Berra put it this way: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded." Or, translating this to design, "Nobody likes kitsch, it's too popular." Yup. If too many people like something, there must be something wrong with it. But isn't that very popularity telling us something? We should stop to consider just why it is popular. People find value in it. It satisfies some basic need. Those who deride kitsch are looking at the wrong aspects. (...)"

É a última referência da programação da EXD'11 que temos em carteira, mas nem por isso menos boa do que qualquer outra que aqui já trouxemos.

Aliás, trata-se de uma notabilíssima exposição, embora já extinta (mas com a possibilidade de itinerar!), que versa na perfeição o tema do Useless escolhido pela bienal.

Fala-nos de uns coitus interruptus infraestrutural (Joseph Grima) acontecidos porque, afinal, o mundo, ou uma sociedade específica, não avançou da maneira esperada ou desejada. Do que restou da ambição de homens que quiseram marcar a diferença no mundo. Da desgraça do espectacular.

Aconteceu na Fundação Arpad Szènes - Vieira da Silva e no Museu da Mãe d'Água, o que também tornou a exposição simbolicamente notável.

Não restou um catálogo, mas aguardamos por que volte acontecer noutro sítio do mundo.

Utilitas Interrupta

It is the last reference from the EXD'11 program we will have here, but no less good than any other we have ever had.

In fact, this is a very remarkable exhibition, though now defunct (but with the possibility of itinerancy!), which deals perfectly with the theme chosen for the biennial - Useless.

It speaks about some infrastructural coitus interruptus (Joseph Grima) happened because, after all, the world, or a specific society, has not progressed as expected or desired. About what remained of the ambition of men who wanted to make a difference in the world. Abut the disgrace of the spectacle. It happened at the Arpad Szenes - Vieira da Silva Foundation and at the Museum of Mãe d'Água, which also made it a symbol.

There remains a catalog, but we look forward to that happening again elsewhere in the world.

É uma edição de apenas 6 exemplares de autor para ser reproduzida aos milhões na China.

Useless? (homenagem póstuma)

Já acabou e constituiu um dos corpos principais que formaram a programação da bienal EXD'11, da Experimentadesign.
Com o nome do tema da própria bienal - Useless - juntou a este os nomes dos notáveis Hans Maier-Aichen e Max Bruinsma, em pareceria, e Jonathan Olivares, no lugar por excelência do design em Lisboa: o MUDE, Museu do Design (e da Moda).
Uma exposição notável que no fundo eram duas exposições, duas maneiras de entender o que é a inutilidade? das coisas que temos a mais.
O trajecto era aleatório, podendo iniciar-se pela visão Uma Perspectiva Explodida, de Olivares, ou pel'A Dor Errante. E se numa tínhamos uma visão racionalista, à maneira de um esquema que conduzia a uma reflexão sobre o consumo, na outra percorríamos um caminho obscuro sob a alçada da sedução desse mesmo consumo. Um percurso completo, portanto.
A juntar à exposição de Fernando Brízio, que se tornou (previsivelmente) na coqueluche da bienal, e ainda à Utilitas Interrupta (não descurando outros acontecimentos notáveis que também fizeram parte), fizeram valer a pena mais uma edição.

Mesmo assim continuamos a reclamar a falta de edições que acompanhem os acontecimentos da bienal, ainda que não esqueçamos a compilação Sem Uso editada por Frederico Duarte e Max Bruisma.

Useless? (memorial)

It's over and was part of the main body that formed the biennial EXD'11 programme by Experimentadesign.
Named after the very theme of the biennial - Useless - has been curated by the notable names of Hans Maier-Aichen and Max Bruinsma, in partnership, and Jonathan Olivares, and happened in the place par excellence of design in Lisbon: MUDE, Design (and Fashion) Museum.
A remarkable exhibition that was two exhibitions, two ways of understanding what is the uselessness of the too much things that we have.
The route was random, and we could start by An Exploded View by Olivares or by The Wandering Pain. And if in one we had a rationalist view, in the manner of a scheme that led to a reflection on consumption, in the other there was a dark path we passed under the umbrella of consumption seduction. A full itinerary.
In addition to the exhibition of Fernando Brízio, that became (predictably) the biennial's favourite, and even the Utilitas Interrupta (not to mention other notable events that also took part), it made the EXD edition worth.
We continue to complain about the lack of issues that accompany the events of the biennial, although we do not forget the compilation of essays and statements Useless, edited by Frederico Duarte and Max Bruisma.

Redundância

Incluído na secção Intervenções Urbanas, do programa da EXD'11, Redundância - A Utilidade da Repetição é um conjunto de intervenções na Praça da Figueira comissariado pela dupla portuense R2.
A praça em questão é um cenário visual confuso, onde tudo parece envelhecer a uma velocidade acelerada.
Qualquer intervenção instalada na praça deverá ser pensada para resistir a esta erosão humana.
Agora pouco subsiste e restam-nos os restos do que já foi.
Entre esses a notável instalação de um dos cinco estúdios convidados (não conseguimos identificar qual), que sobrepõe reproduções fotográficas de grande formato à mesma paisagem que reproduz, propondo um jogo óptico redundante que joga com a luz, condicionada pela atmosfera, e com o tempo real/ do registo fotográfico.
Depois há os restos (alguns já foram retirados) com que teremos que lidar até ao final de Novembro.
Até há quem não dê por nada.

Redundancy

Included in the section Urban Interventions, from the program EXD'11, Redundância - The Utility of Repetition is a set of interventions in Praça da Figueira commissioned by the Oporto's pair R2.
The square in question is a confusing visual scenario, where everything seems to age at an accelerated speed.
Any intervention installed in the square should be thought to resist to this human erosion.
Now little remains and we are left with the remains of what once was.
Among these there is the remarkable installation one of the five guest studios (which we cannot identify), which overlays large format photographic reproductions of the same landscape which reproduces, suggesting a redundant optical game that plays with light, conditioned by the atmosphere, and with the time, real / of the photographic record.
Then there are the remains (some have already been removed) that we will have to deal until the end of November.
Some people do not even notice it.

Ainda que tivéssemos achado o Le Silencio demasiado burguês para um David Lynch, rendemo-nos a estas Wire, também do realizador e também partes integrantes do espaço.
São uma edição limitada de 25 exemplares + 2 P.A pela Domeau & Pérès.
Não nos remetem para o imaginário dos filmes de Lynch coisa nenhuma. Mas ainda bem, pois quem se quer ver remetido para uma embrulhada (será isso?) daquelas?

Wire by Lynch

Even though we have found the Le Silence too bourgeois for a David Lynch, we surrender ourselves to these Wire, also by the director and also a part of the space.
It is a limited edition of 25 copies + 2 AP edited by Domeau & Pérès.
We are not referred to the imagery of Lynch's films. But thankfully: who wants to be referred to a mess like that?

É verdade que já acabou e pouco provavelmente tão cedo se poderão voltar a ver tantos trabalhos de João Penalva juntos.
Foi um deleite para quem teve tempo para ver a exposição e percorrer as estórias que Penalva insiste em nos contar.
Só não gostámos de ver Wallenda (1997-98) condensada num cubículo no fim da exposição. Depois de seguirmos o assobio da Sagração durante parte da exposição, defraudaram-nos as expectativas.
Mas valeu-nos tudo o resto.

It is over and you won't probably have the chance soon to see so many works of João Penalva together.
It was a feast for those who took the time to go see the exhibition and the stories that the works of Penalva insists on telling us.
Just didn't like to see Wallenda (1997-98) condensed in a cubicle at the end of the exhibition. After following the Rite's whistle, the expectations have been defrauded.
But everything else was worth it.

É terrível como é mesmo verdade que o pior pesadelo de mau gosto vai, mais tarde ou mais cedo, tornar-se num fashion statement.
Claro que o contrário também acontece - os fashion statements tornam-se, ainda mais rapidamente, nos piores pesadelos de mau gosto.
E há sítios propícios para isto acontecer: os fashion shows ou fashion weeks ou simplesmente os concentrados de desfiles que acontecem para serem imagem das cidades civilizadas.
Ir a uma ModaLisboa (e tudo o que dissermos de mal acerca da ModaLisboa não é mal que chegue para deixarmos de ser convidados VIP, ou Club, como por lá nos chamam, ou sequer deixarmos de lá ir, o que quer dizer que a ModaLisboa tem poder de encaixe) é ver, para lá dos desfiles, que são o que são, o terror dos pretensos trend setters que não têm outra maneira de se fazer notar.
Quando têm entre 18 e 25 anos até aceitamos e até achamos graça. Mas depois disso já começa a ser altura de pensar nos subsídios de Natal e de férias que vão ser diluídos, acabando com o Natal e com as férias como os conhecíamos.
Assim sendo fica o nosso alerta: "a sério" deixem-se disso. Ou bem que são Annas Piaggi e vivem cheios de certezas, ou bem que se deixam disso.
Os vossos fashion statements nunca serão fashion statements para mais ninguém. Apenas mau gosto.

Fashion Statements

It's terrible how it is really true that the worst nightmare of bad taste will become, sooner or later, a fashion statement.
Of course the opposite also happens - the fashion statements become even more rapidly the worst nightmares of bad taste.
And there are places suitable for this: the fashion weeks and fashion shows or simply concentrates of fashion shows that take place to be the image of civilized cities.
Going to a ModaLisboa (Lisbon Fashion Week) is to see beyond the catwalks, the alleged terror trend setters who have no other way of being noticed.
When you are between the 18 and the 25 we accept it and even like it. But after that it starts to be time to think about things how they really are.
So this is our warning: "seriously" stop it. Or you are Anna Piaggi, and you are full of certainties, or else you stop it.
Your fashion statements will never be fashion statements to anyone else. Only bad taste.

É um dos mais notáveis acontecimentos da bienal EXD'11, ainda que aconteça num espaço de Lisboa com características especiais, longe da formalidade do white cube, e, ainda assim, seja uma digníssima exposição dos processos e resultados do trabalho de Fernando Brízio.
O designer, que desde o final da década de 1990 tem vindo a dar a conhecer o seu trabalho, atingiu momentos altos do seu reconhecimento ao ser capa das revistas Intramuros (n.º 109, 2003) e Icon (n.º 62, 2008), ou ao fazer parte da lista de artistas e designers das galerias Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art e Galerie Kreo (esta última serve de estandarte em cada parágrafo escrito sobre o designer).
Mas é com as mãos na massa, longe desse estrelato, que o vemos na exposição Desenho Habitado.
Com a falta de um catálogo que marque o momento e registe o que já existe, resta-nos uma publicação onde podemos ler Carla Cardoso, o próprio Brízio, Vera Sacchetti, Filomena Silvano, Susana Gaudêncio e Delfim Sardo (o que é que faltava?).
E é nas palavras de Delfim Sardo que resumimos:
"Há três características no trabalho de Fernando Brízio que o transformam num caso muito peculiar no contexto do design: a primeira deriva da sua atenção à relação entre o material e as suas potencialidades, fundando aí a especificação conceptual dos seus projectos. A segunda radica no investimento obsessivo na qualidade afectiva de cada um dos seus projectos, transformando-os em peças únicas, em múltiplos que são, cada um, variações idênticas de um protótipo. A terceira liga-se às duas anteriores e consiste na ligação entre o seu carácter recolector e a forma como as inúmeras colecções de objectos são a matéria afectiva e a base cognitiva do desenvolvimento projectual. (...)"

Mr. Fernando

It is one of the most remarkable events of the EXD'11 biennial, even if it happens in a space with special features, away from the formality of the white cube and still be a dignified exhibition of the processes and results of the work of Fernando Brízio.
The designer, who since the late 1990s has been showing his work, hit the highlights of his recognition to be on the cover of magazines like Intramuros (No. 109, 2003) or Icon (No. 62, 2008), or to join the list of artists and designers of Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art and Galerie Kreo galleries (the latter serves as a flag in each paragraph written about the designer).
But it is hands-on, out of this stardom, that we see him in the exhibition Desenho Habitado (inhabited drawing).
With the lack of a catalog that marks the moment and records what already exists, we are left with a small publication where we can read Carla Cardoso, Brízio himself, Vera Sacchetti, Filomena Silvano, Susana Gaudêncio and Delfim Sardo (what was missing? ).
And it is with Sardo's words that we summarize:
"There are three features in the work of Fernando Brízio that transforms it in a very peculiar within the context of design: the first stems from its attention to the relationship between the material and its potential, founding there the conceptual specification of his projects. The second lies in the obsessive investment in the affective quality of each of its projects, turning them into unique pieces that are, in multiples, identical variations of a prototype. The third connects to the previous two and is the connection between his recolector character and how his numerous collections of objects are the raw emotional and cognitive development of his project development. (...)"

Temos uma fixação com este candeeiro desde há tanto tempo que nem sabemos precisar quanto tempo.

Diz-nos o website do editor - Santa & Cole (Espanha) - que é de 1961 e que é resultado do projecto de Miguel Milá (n. 1931, Barcelona), uma espécie de Daciano espanhol (herdeiro da famosa Casa Milá em Barcelona).

Na verdade não se afasta muito do design português da mesma época, juntando um racionalismo formal a um sistema inventivo que propõe uma solução funcional que permite várias utilizações.

O resultado é um objecto belíssimo e intemporal, que ainda não parou aqui por casa não sabemos bem porquê.

Obsession

We have an obsession with this lamp for so long, that we don't know for how long.

The editor's website - Santa & Cole (Spain) - tells us that it is from 1961 and that the project is a result of of the work by Miguel Milá (b. 1931, Barcelona), a kind of Spanish Daciano (heir to the famous Casa Milá in Barcelona).

Not really that far from the same time Portuguese design, adding a formal rationality to a system that proposes an inventive functional solution that allows multiple uses.

The result is a beautiful and timeless object that we still don't have one, we don't know why.

Rumámos à Caroline Pagès Gallery, em Campo de Ourique, e levámos uns designs.

About Modern at Caroline Pagès

Here we are again, showing off.
We headed to the Caroline Pagès Gallery, in Campo de Ourique (Lisbon), and we took a few designs.
For the first of this series of exhibitions - Design Show # 1 - we took Daniel Enoksson (Sweden) and Toni Grilo (Portugal).
One and one comprise what we called About Modern, either through the plan and the color, either through the line as structure.
A selection of unique items, limited editions or special editions for the gallery, within the design biennial EXD'11, that happens for these months in Lisbon.

A leiloeira Wright20 apresenta mais um leilão com criações de Pierre Jeanneret, algumas em parceria com Le Corbusier, desenhadas para instituições públicas da cidade.

Chandigarh for Auction

Chandigarh, unlike announced by local authorities, continues to serve.
The Wright20 auction house presents another auction with the designs by Pierre Jeanneret, some in partnership with Le Corbusier, designed for public institutions of the city.
We shall see if it's the latter.

É, mais uma vez, puxar a brasa à nossa sardinha.
Mas, também por isso, não vamos puxar pelos nossos louros.
Coralie Bickford-Smith é já um elemento essencial quando se fala dos clássicos da Penguin Books.
Tem um imaginário infinito povoado das imagens que conseguem ilustrar as capas destas obras.
Aplica-o com a mestria de uma grande designer que se tornou perita nestas coisas.
As suas colecções já começam a ser reconhecidas, procuradas e coleccionadas, não só por devoradores de livros mas também por design victims e até pode decoradoras (desculpem o sexismo do género aplicado).
São objectos de desejo, e por isso decidimos trazê-los às vistas das população de Lisboa.
Através da BÁ Studio, concebemos a exposição Coralie Bickford-Smith para a Penguin Books no Espaço BÁ, contíguo ao atelier de design.
É um Projecto Tangencial à bienal de design EXD'11 e contou com a presença da designer a inaugurar e a assinar uma edição de serigrafias editadas pelo Centro Português de Serigrafia.

Coralie Bickford-Smith in Lisbon

Coralie Bickford-Smith is now an essential element when it comes to the classics of Penguin Books.
She has an infinite imaginary crowded with images that can illustrate the covers of these books.
Applying it with the mastery of a great designer made her become an expert in these things.
Its collections are beginning to be recognized, demanded and collected, not only by books worms but also by design victims and even interior designers.
It became objects of desire, and so we decided to bring them to the views of the people in Lisbon.
With BÁ Studio, we curated the exhibition Coralie Bickford-Smith for Penguin Books at Espaço BÁ, adjacent to the design studio.
It is a Tangential Project to EXD'11 design biennial and was attended by the designer to inaugurate it and sign an edition of screenprints published by the Centro Português de Serigrafia.

Simon Hazan é novo (acabou o Royal College of Art em 2008) e é fascinado por técnicas "obscuras", de entre as quais o processo medieval de cuir bouilli, genericamente com couro trabalhado depois de fervido em água.
Sem dúvida que a aparência das suas peças é, na sua maioria, medieval, mas mesmo assim deixámo-nos surpreender por este banco, que alia ao trabalho artesanal do couro um estrutura produzida industrialmente.
Se continuar a sair das trevas seguiremos o seu caminho até Florença.

Stool

Simon Hazan is young (he just finished the Royal College of Art in 2008) and is fascinated by "obscure crafts techniques", from which the medieval the cuir bouilli process, generally consists in working with leather after emerged in boiled water.
No doubt the appearance of his designs is mostly medieval, but still we let ourselves be surprised by this stool, which combines the craftsmanship of the leather with an industrially produced structure.
If he continues to leave the darkness we will follow his way to Florence.

Nas vésperas de inaugurar uma Introspectiva de Filipe Alarcão e ainda uma parceria com a bienal EXD, voltámos ao MUDE.
Depois de, há dois anos, ter inaugurado as instalações que vai ocupar na Baixa de Lisboa, onde pontua a intervenção mínima na proposta arquitectónica do edifício, apresenta desde Maio um novo discurso museológico para a exposição permanente.
Tantas vezes acusado de ter uma colecção que apresenta o design nas suas vertentes mais elitistas, com propostas de ligadas ao luxo, aos autores, aos movimentos de vanguarda e até às artes plásticas, surge-nos agora com Único e Múltiplo: Dois Séculos de Design, onde não só vai buscar referências mais populares da cultura material e do design, como alarga o seu intervalo temporal.
É um percurso cronológico, contextualizado por referências históricas de cada época, onde a Colecção Francisco Capelo ganha uma nova utilidade e referenciação.
Os objectos Únicos continuam lá, mas serão sempre esses os que marcaram a diferença e ditaram os avanços nos paradigmas da criação material que nos passa pelas mãos.

In the run of inaugurating an Introspective of Filipe Alarcão and a partnership with EXD biennial, we returned to MUDE.
After two years since the inauguration of the building at Baixa, in Lisbon, there is a new discourse for the museum permanent exhibition.So often accused of having a collection that presents the design in its most elitist version, with objects related to luxury, authors, avant-garde movements and even to visual arts, it comes to us now with Único e Múltiplo: Dois Séculos de Design (Single and Multiple: Two Centuries of Design) where not only it gets more popular references of the material culture and design, but it extends its time span.
It is a chronological exhibition, contextualized by historical references of each epoch, where the Francisco Capelo Collection gets a new utility and referral.
Unique objects are still there, but these will always be those who made the difference and dictated the advances in the paradigms of the material creation that passes through our hands.
